That is a great question and not one on which there is a lot of agreement! In purely legal and financial terms, in Massachusetts practicing psychotherapy outside of a community mental health clinic requires a license issued by the state. And licensed psychotherapists can accept health insurance. And as member of a health profession, they have certain ethical codes and regulations they must follow.
NLP practitioners in much of Europe are licensed therapists just as Mental Health Clinicians, Social Workers and Psychologists are professions that do psychotherapy.
Some claim psychotherapy treats mental illness and pathology, while NLP and coaches focus on making concrete changes in the persons life and achieving health. Some would say coaches and NLP practitioner work more short term and with healthier clients. But it would be a rather weak therapy that fails to work toward health and a weak coaching that avoids addressing suffering. So much has to do with accountability. While we do not accept the distinction made here, I would say that someone who is on the verge of hospitalized would be better off with a psychotherapists because of the greater level of responsibility law and professions put on psychotherapists for dealing with such acute cases.
On the other hand, NLP is well known for effective and evidence-based work in healing Trauma. Before studying psychotherapy, many our founder’s therapist friends sent clients to her. Our experience is that NLP can address some of the issues that block the resolution of trauma much more quickly than in most forms of psychotherapy.
When you call for a free consultation, we can discuss the kind of change work is likely to be best for you given your uniqueness and your concerns and goals. At this point our primary staff, Renee and Mabella, do psychotherapy at clinics. Mabella has done this for decades due to her commitment to work with the Latinx and marginalized communities. We have affiliated colleagues to whom we will refer anyone for whom psychotherapy is more appropriate. In the not-so-distant future, we plan to be able to offer psychotherapy and accept insurance through lifeworks directly.
